DETROIT — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced yesterday plans to investigate Ford Motor Co. for a defect in a cruise-control switch related to a recall from January. More than 3.7 million Ford pickups and SUVs are involved in the recall, including Ford F-150 pickups from the 1995 to 1999 and 2001 to 2002 model years, and Ford Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators from the 1997 to 1999 and 2001 to 2002 model years.

NHTSA received 218 complaints of engine fires caused by a faulty cruise-control switch in these models. According to the automaker, the cruise-control switch could short circuit and cause an engine compartment fire when the vehicle was parked or being driven, even if the cruise control was not being used. No injuries or fatalities were reported in conjunction with the complaints.
