New VDO REDI-Sensor Video Warns Techs About Extra-Step Programming For Some TPMS Sensors

Video contrasts extra step TPMS sensor programming versus TPMS vehicle relearn.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Continental Commercial Vehicles & Aftermarket, one of the industry’s leading manufacturers of OE Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems and OE-engineered TPMS replacement parts, has released a new video in its TPMS training series. Titled “TPMS Vehicle Relearn vs. TPMS Sensor Programming,” the new video highlights the differences between a traditional TPMS vehicle relearn procedure and the new sensor programming procedure required by some "universal" and "programmable" TPMS sensors.

The video explains that universal, programmable and other replacement sensors that use cloning are often manufactured as blanks and must be programmed with software for the specific vehicle application before they can be used. This is a new, extra step and it may require specialized training and new tools. The video contrasts these new "extra-step" sensors with VDO REDI-Sensor, a multi-application TPMS sensor that comes pre-programmed and ready, right out of the box, for vehicle installation, just like an OE sensor, according to Continental.

According to Steve Landis, product manager for Continental, “A vehicle relearn has always been required during sensor replacement, but now, some aftermarket sensors also require sensor programming prior to installation and relearn. This is a new, added step beyond the vehicle relearn procedure, and it requires a specific programming tool investment with specialized software for the sensor programming process. VDO REDI-Sensor never requires added TPMS sensor programming.”

Landis added, “While the new programming step can be avoided by choosing REDI-Sensor, the vehicle relearn process confirms proper TPM System functionality and should never be skipped for any sensor, OE or aftermarket.”

VDO REDI-Sensor is a multi-application TPMS sensor that covers more than 85 percent of all vehicles in North America with only three sensor SKUs and replaces more than 140 OE sensors.  REDI-Sensor is designed to follow standard OE vehicle relearn procedures, and works with all major TPMS scan tools, including those from ATEQ, Bartec, OTC/SPX, K-Tool (T.I.P.S.) and Snap-on.
