MEMA Releases ‘The Power to Move America’

The U.S. automotive products manufacturing industry, valued at $365 billion, touches the lives of every American, according to The Power to Move America, a new publication produced by the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA).

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC — The U.S. automotive products manufacturing industry, valued at $365 billion, touches the lives of every American, according to The Power to Move America, a new publication produced by the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA).

“The automotive supplier industry’s broad reach goes well beyond vehicle owners due to the large number of businesses and the millions of employees needed to manufacture and distribute necessary parts and products,” said Frank Hampshire, MEMA director of market research.

For example, trucks haul over 1.3 trillion ton-miles of goods and materials, valued at $6.2 trillion, on America’s highways. Wheeled vehicles – including personal vehicles, cabs and buses – provide the major source of transportation, logging 4,481 billion passenger miles.

“Automotive products manufacturers make a substantial contribution to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) and deserve to be better understood by both consumers and policymakers,” Hampshire noted. “The total highway transportation sector contributes over $1.2 trillion to our economy.”

The Power to Move America is a pocket guide to the industry, providing a “10,000-foot view” of the automotive industry, the transportation environment and the economic consequences of motor vehicle use in the United States.

The pocket guide provides statistics on manufacturing employment, passenger and freight movement, vehicle ownership, environmental advancement and safety improvements.

It also contains a table of some key industry statistics for all 50 states licensed drivers, vehicles in use, miles driven, miles of roadway and number of automotive product manufacturing plants

Single copies are available for $10, with quantity discounts available. Ordering information is available at the MEMA Web site, mema.org, or by e-mailing [email protected].
