Mark Herman Named Delmar Cengage Learning/ASE Master Automobile Technician Of The Year

Technician from South Dakota achieves highest scores on 2012 ASE certification exams.

CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. – Delmar, a division Cengage Learning that provides learning solutions for ongoing career development and education, announced that Mark Herman of Aberdeen, S.D., has been named the Delmar Cengage Learning/Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Automobile Technician of the Year.

The award, sponsored by Delmar, recognizes the automotive technician earning the highest composite score on the ASE certification exams, the industry standard for automotive service professionals. Herman’s scores were the highest of more than 350,000 professionals, for which Delmar awarded him with a cash prize and an all-expenses-paid trip to the annual ASE Board of Director’s Industry Awards Dinner in San Antonio, Texas, where he was presented with the award.

"The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence is renowned throughout the industry for its dedication to improving the quality of automotive service and repair," said Greg Clayton, vice president, Delmar. "We share this commitment with ASE and are proud to support technicians, such as Mark Herman, as they demonstrate a passion for continued development in their profession and a strong dedication to their customers and employers."

Herman has been working as an automotive technician for 31 years and is currently serving as a master diagnostic technician at Harr Motors in Aberdeen, S.D. Highlights from Herman’s career include being named the two-time Auto Tech VICA State Champion, the four-time Toyota Kansas City Region Champion and National Champion of the 1994 Toyota Master Tech Skills Competition, and the two-time national winner and 2012 district winner of the Honda Top Tech Challenge, among other accomplishments.

"I am so honored to receive this award from Cengage Learning and ASE," said Herman. "Having ASE Certification is very important in this industry, and shows customers that I have made a sincere commitment to professionally take care of their products. I look forward to continuing this commitment within my career, just as I have done over the past 31 years."

John Saia, technical and body training development manager, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. said he was delighted to learn that Herman, a Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician (MDT), was recognized as the 2012 Cengage Learning/ASE Master Automobile Technician of the Year.

"It’s no coincidence that Mark is being recognized as the ‘Best-Of-The-Best’," he said. "Mark has achieved both the highest level of ASE certification and also the highest level of Toyota technician certification, ‘master diagnostic technician’, which accounts for fewer than 10 percent of Toyota technicians. Mark continues to demonstrate an uncompromising dedication to competence and professionalism because he believes in lifelong learning, the value of an ASE Certification and setting a strong example for others."

Delmar has a wide variety of learning solutions designed to help automotive technicians prepare for ASE exams. These solutions are available in print and digital formats to best meet the needs of the user and are also provided in both English and Spanish.
