Every so often, our editorial staff selects one aftermarket industry professional to get to know a little better. Participants are asked to respond to a series of questions that can be answered in about the same amount of time you might spend chatting at the office coffee pot or waiting for an elevator. In today’s installment of “Five Minutes With,” we get to know Gray Fredrick, who recently joined Advanced Fuel Dynamics as Sales and Marketing Director.
What was your first job in the industry?
I entered the industry as the sales and marketing manager for Keisler Engineering, the pioneering manufacturer of installation systems for retro-fitment of TREMEC 5 and 6-speeds in classic V8 muscle cars, sports cars, race cars and rods.
What do you like best about your current position?
Advanced Fuel Dynamics is on the cutting-edge in E85 injection management technology, which is a relatively new segment. Getting in on the ground floor as the sales and marketing director gives me a chance to define the market, educate the public and really push the boundaries of creative marketing. It is also satisfying to be part of a small organization where my input and achievements show up directly on the bottom line.
Did you initially intend to pursue a career in the aftermarket? If not, what drew you to the industry and what keeps you here?
I have been an auto enthusiast since childhood and was always at the local library waiting for the newest edition of Hot Rod Magazine. My initial goals were to join a large advertising firm in their creative department but the aftermarket provides a creative outlet in an ever-changing industry that matches my interests. I feel lucky to be able to work in an industry I love in a position that needs my knowledge and creativity.
What do you do when not at work?
When I have free time I wrench on my own muscle cars, develop new products in various industries and write creative novels and self help books.
What one word best sums up your personality?
Creative.
What was your first car?
A 1968 Ford Thunderbird coupe with a 429 Thunderjet big block.
What are you currently reading?
“Capitalism” by Ayn Rand
Favorite quote/mantra/motto?
“We are the music-makers and we are the dreamers of dreams”
– poet Arthur O’Shaunessy
