Edmunds Announces New 2019 Tech Driven Award Winners

The Tech Driven Awards honor the most innovative technologies and features available today in dealer showrooms.

The car-shopping experts at Edmunds have announced the newest winners of this year’s Edmunds Tech Driven Awards. The second phase of the 2019 Tech Driven Awards specifically honor the automakers that have done the best job at integrating state-of-the-art technology into vehicles currently available for sale.

“While it’s exciting to envision how the automotive industry might look in a decade, what’s really impressive is the pace at which automakers are incorporating next-generation technologies into current vehicles,” said Alistair Weaver, editor-in-chief at Edmunds. “Our Tech Driven Awards are designed to give shoppers an inside look at the coolest automotive innovations they can buy now.”

The winners are:

  • Most Innovative New In-Car FeatureMercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX)

o   The MBUX system sports intuitive natural language voice control, augmented reality heads-up navigation, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

  • Most Innovative New Engineering Technology Feature – GMC MultiPro Tailgate

o   With multiple configurations, the MultiPro Tailgate offers more flexibility than standard tailgates, providing enhanced utility for a variety of uses, from loading heavy cargo to tailgating at the big game.

  • Most Innovative New Safety or Driving Aid – Subaru DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System

o   DriverFocus uses an in-car camera to detect if the driver becomes distracted or drowsy, and can even slow the vehicle to a stop after repeated ignored warnings.

Now in its second year, the Edmunds Tech Driven Awards celebrate the innovative automotive technologies poised to revolutionize the industry both now and in the future. The first phase of the 2019 Tech Driven Awards honored future-facing technologies or concepts and the winners were announced in January at CES 2019.

Connected Vehicles Need the Right to Repair

A fleet of connected vehicles delivers many benefits to society and the motoring public, but critical technical decisions need to be made.

connected-vehicles

A modern vehicle is a powerful computer on wheels with dozens of interconnected modules, sensors and controllers. The technology works together to deliver the cleanest, safest and most fuel-efficient form of transportation ever. Automotive engineers have long dreamed of connecting these advanced vehicles to one another (V2V) and to roadside infrastructure (V2I). When vehicles can sense and communicate with one another, accidents can be avoided, traffic flow and speed can be smoothed, emergency vehicle response times can be improved and more. With these same vehicles connected to other devices such as traffic signals, pedestrians with mobile phones and other infrastructure (V2X – vehicle to everything), safety goes up and fuel consumption goes down. A fleet of connected vehicles delivers many benefits to society and the motoring public. Early examples of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are deployed in the US and around the world. Billions of dollars have been allocated in the United States to deploy ITS on hundreds of miles of roadways and in municipal pilot sites in Tampa, Arizona, Utah and Michigan.
