FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. — In a speech that’s sure to convince everyone present that they’ve got it good I no matter what their job description, Mike Rowe, host and producer of the Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs TV series, will give the keynote address at The Work Truck Show 2009 and 45th Annual National Truck Equipment Association (NTEA) Convention.
Rowe’s presentation will take place at the President’s Breakfast and NTEA Annual Meeting from 7:30–9:15a.m on Thursday, March 5, 2009.
The Work Truck Show 2009, North America’s largest work truck event, is held in conjunction with the 45th Annual NTEA Convention March 4-6, 2009, (convention starts March 3) at the McCormick Place West Building in Chicago.
As host of Dirty Jobs, Rowe regularly serves as an apprentice to everyday men and women who perform the jobs no one else wants, like horse inseminator, road kill removal specialist and sewer inspector. Rowe pays tribute to a nation of unsung heroes while exploring the dirty side of earning an honest living. He is constantly putting his hands (and body) into places that are often curious, sometimes dangerous and always dirty. Many of his jobs have required Rowe to use work trucks and equipment. Consider this small sampling of assignments:
• Septic tank cleaner
• Airport maintenance and runway painter
• Mosquito control officer
• Demolition man
• Well digger
• Biodiesel fuel maker
• House deconstruction worker
• Garbage collector
• U.S. Army vehicle mechanic
• Auto salvager
“It is always an exciting challenge to find just the right keynote speaker who can entertain, educate and inspire our audience,” said Jim Carney, NTEA executive director. “With his quick wit, optimism and self-deprecating sense of humor, I’m sure Mike Rowe will clean up well to provide our members and attendees with fun and insightful stories.”
In addition to his responsibilities on Dirty Jobs, Rowe also narrates Deadliest Catch, the Discovery Channel series about Alaskan crab fishing, one of the world’s most dangerous professions.
In his cleaner days, Rowe sang professionally with The Baltimore Opera, sold more than $100 million of fake diamonds on the midnight shift at QVC and appeared in several dozen Tylenol commercials. He also spent three years as the host of Evening Magazine for CBS in San Francisco.
The President’s Breakfast and NTEA Annual Meeting at which Rowe will speak is open to Show and Convention attendees by ticket only. Tickets usually sell out early, so advance registration is recommended. Tickets are $50 for NTEA members and $70 for nonmembers (if purchased by Jan. 16, 2009). A ticket is also included in the Complete Event Package, which is $299 for NTEA members and $379 for nonmembers (if purchased by Jan. 16, 2009).
