Continental Conveyor Plant In Halstead, Kansas, Celebrating 80th Anniversary

The facility was started in 1939 by a tire repairman and today builds conveyor belts for Continental.

Continental’s Halstead, Kansas, plant, recently celebrated its 80th anniversary.

“We are proud to share in this 80th anniversary celebration of a very valuable and productive facility,” said Jim Hill, ContiTech CEO for the North America Region. “This plant has made belting for applications all over the world, and we are confident that it will continue that process into the future.”

The plant began business in 1939, started by tire repairman Ed Toevs, who called his shop the Rub-R-Slat Draper Co. In 1940, Toevs partnered with Everett Legg who, in 1952, bought out Toevs for $114,572.57.

In 1964, the company was incorporated as Legg Co. Inc. Today, the 182,000-square-foot plant sits on 14 acres about 30 miles northwest of Wichita, in central Kansas.

“Our facility has been a strong contributor to the Continental family of conveyor belting,” said Cody Knauss, plant manager. “This is due, in great part, to an exceptional workforce, and we look forward to at least another 80 years of successful business practices.”

“The Halstead plant is part of an organization that enables us to strategically position ourselves to provide dynamic growth for all of the conveyor belt markets in which we compete in the North America region,” said Hill. “We will continue to grow our customer network and provide the seamless distribution of our products with our focus on North America.”
