NEW YORK — CBS Evening News presented a consumer alert news segment on Friday, Jan. 21, focusing on the difficulties independent technicians are experiencing in repairing vehicles today. The segment talked about how technicians are unable to access the diagnostic codes necessary to repair the more than 50 computers found onboard today’s autos.

The segment touched on the Right to Repair issue, and how some repair shops want Congress to force automakers to provide all the computer information needed to diagnose and repair any problem. It also featured comments from those who feel legislation is unnecessary.

CBS also highlighted a survey, paid for by independent mechanics, which found almost 60 percent of them couldn’t access the information they needed and more than 50 percent turned away customers.
