Bosch and Mazda Sign EDR Retrieval Tool License Agreement

Mazda is one more in a growing list of vehicle manufacturers that have agreements with Bosch to access this data. Bosch already has agreements with Chrysler, Ford, General Motors and Toyota to support EDR readouts from their cars and light trucks.

BROADVIEW, Ill. – Bosch and Mazda Motor Corp. have entered into a license agreement to allow Bosch access to Mazda Event Data Recorder (EDR) system information, for the purpose of supporting Mazda automobiles with the Bosch Crash Data Retrieval (CDR) tool. The CDR tool that is designed, manufactured and sold by Bosch is used by law enforcement, accident reconstructionists, government agencies and insurance companies to retrieve and translate EDR records.

Mazda is one more in a growing list of vehicle manufacturers that have agreements with Bosch to access this data. Bosch already has agreements with Chrysler, Ford, General Motors and Toyota to support EDR readouts from their cars and light trucks.

Starting in September of 2012, automobile manufacturers will be required to ensure that new light vehicles equipped with an EDR in their ECUs allow EDR data to be retrieved by a commercially available tool following a crash. This is in compliance with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) final rule (49 CFR Part 563), and manufacturers will be required to have this capability in place within 90 days of the first sale of such a vehicle into the U.S. market.

“We are pleased to expand our EDR software coverage to include Mazda vehicles. Bosch will now be able to further support the industry to obtain EDR information for additional vehicles on the road today. This not only assists the investigation community, but also helps in vehicle research to help produce even safer vehicles for the future,” said Dan Walker, CDR business manager for Diagnostics Business Unit, Robert Bosch LLC.

A CDR tool currently allows the user to retrieve EDR records from Chrysler, Fiat, Ford, General Motors and Toyota airbag control modules, General Motors rollover sensors and Ford powertrain control modules. The Bosch CDR tool is the only crash data retrieval system available in the aftermarket for vehicles from any of these manufacturers.

The Bosch CDR software is available as either a 1-year or 3-year software subscription. A subscription purchase will allow the user to automatically receive all CDR System Software updates released during the subscription period. The CDR software can be downloaded from the Internet and will include an installation program that allows users to install and run the CDR program on one computer.
