CHICAGO — In what it described as a reflection of China’s significance to the company, BorgWarner is opening an office in Shanghai, which will include representatives from BorgWarner’s five business units and corporate staff.
Freeman Shen will oversee the Shanghai office. Shen was recently named country manager of BorgWarner China. She previously served as director of operations – Asia for BorgWarner Emissions/Thermal Systems in Ningbo, China.
“The Shanghai operation represents a new level of collaboration between the global BorgWarner business units, and is tangible evidence of the importance of China to our growth plans,” said Tim Manganello, BorgWarner Chairman and CEO.
BorgWarner entered the Chinese market in 1993 through a joint venture to supply transmission products to Beijing Jeep. That business was restructured in 2000 to focus on four-wheel drive/all-wheel drive products. BorgWarner Emissions/Thermal Systems also operates a joint venture in Ningbo, which was formed in 1998 for the production of thermal products.
The company plans to expand several of its engine and drivetrain systems businesses in China. BorgWarner recently announced $1.4 billion in expected new business between 2005-07, 20 percent of which is expected in Asia. The company anticipates that Asia will account for 14 percent of its global sales by 2006.
