Legislation (H.R. 3457) to require the labeling of consumer cleaning items, including automotive appearance products, with a complete list of ingredients was introduced Nov. 17 by Rep. Steve Isreal (D-N.Y.)
H.R. 3457 would require each ingredient to be clearly listed on the label in descending order of predominance by weight. An ingredient may be exempt for five years from the labeling required if the manufacturer can demonstrate to the Consumer Product Safety Commission that the ingredient is a trade secret. Automotive products covered by the requirements are defined as a “chemically formulated consumer product designed to maintain the appearance of a motor vehicle, but does not include automotive paint or a paint repair product.”
“Our cabinets are full of soaps and cleaners that we assume improve our homes and health. However, new research shines a light on the secret chemicals that might be doing more harm than good. You have a right to know what’s hiding in your household products. That’s why I’m introducing legislation to require full disclosure of the ingredients in everyday cleaning products,” said Rep. Israel.
