Automotive Tool Makers Get the Scoop on New Vehicles at ETI Detroit Tech Week

More than 80 representatives from 42 automotive tool and equipment manufacturers received technical information on new and upcoming vehicles direct from the carmakers at the 24th Annual Detroit Tech Week, held June 14-18 and hosted by the Equipment and Tool Institute (ETI).

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC — More than 80 representatives from 42 automotive tool and equipment manufacturers received technical information on new and upcoming vehicles direct from the carmakers at the 24th Annual Detroit Tech Week, held June 14-18 and hosted by the Equipment and Tool Institute (ETI).

Each day of Detroit Tech Week is devoted to a specific manufacturer. Representatives and engineers from DaimlerChrysler, Ford, General Motors and Volkswagen/Audi each presented information on new technologies, engineering, diagnostic and repair features of model year 2005 vehicles and beyond. In addition, this year a group of Volvo engineers traveled from Sweden to present at Tech Week.

The carmakers opened their facilities to ETI members, and had their engineers and designers present on their respective areas of expertise. Some OEMs provided bodies in white, rolling chassis and future model vehicles for Tech Week attendees to see and inspect.

“It is always helpful for us to be able to actually walk over and look at the vehicles we are discussing,” said Chuck Cunningham of Hennessey Industries. “That way, we see exactly what they are talking about and can ask questions right then.”

Detroit Tech Week has become one of the main events in ETI’s annual calendar, according to Charlie Gorman, ETI executive manager. Detroit Tech Week benefits the entire automotive service industry as well as the individual vehicle owner, Gorman said.

“By providing such open communication and data, the car companies are ensuring that their vehicles can be repaired correctly,” said Gorman. “Our members are able to get accurate and timely repair information directly from the source, which allows them to build better tools and equipment. The car owners experience greater satisfaction as a result of being able to have their vehicle repaired correctly. Everybody wins with Tech Week.

Next year will be the 25th year this educational event has been held. ETI will celebrate the quarter century mark of Tech Week with a “Silver Anniversary Celebration” banquet and other special activities.
