CLEVELAND — A number of familiar names in the automotive industry have made it to Industry Week magazine’s Top 50 list this year.

Featured in the August issue of Industry Week, the article — Focus on the Best 50 — selected its picks from top manufacturing companies featured in the IW U.S. 500, a list of the largest publicly traded manufacturing firms in America. The magazine selected the top performers by comparing financial performance from 2000 to 2003 and examining six areas: revenue growth, return on equity, profit margin, asset turnover, inventory turnover and return on assets.

Among the automotive-related companies that made the list were Exxon Mobil Corp., ChevronTexaco, Johnson Controls, 3M, Clorox, American Axle & Manufacturing and Reynolds & Reynolds Co.

A fun bit of trivia to note: If one were to merge all 50 of the companies on the list into one, combined revenues would be close to $700 billion, and its profits more than $65 billion. Now, that’s what you’d call big business.
