TROY, MI — ArvinMeritor has been awarded a $1.7 million grant from the Indiana 21st Century Research and Development Fund. The grant will assist in the development of the company’s Plasma Fuel Reformer exhaust emissions technology, which is being developed at the company’s Columbus, Ind., Emissions Technical Center.
According to the company, this new technology could revolutionize the way commercial and light vehicle original equipment manufacturers meet the strict 2010 diesel engine emission standards.
The plasma fuel reformer produces a hydrogen-rich gas — which burns clean at low temperatures — from the diesel fuel onboard the vehicle. This hydrogen can be used as a lower-cost, highly efficient, fast-starting regenerator of traps for nitrogen oxide (NOx) traps that will soon be used in diesel exhaust gas after-treatment. Moreover, as the hydrogen is produced onboard from the vehicle’s fuel, the Plasma Fuel Reformer reduces the need for onboard storage.
Purdue University will collaborate with ArvinMeritor to improve fuel spray mixing and combustion processes to help complete the final development of the plasma fuel reformer.
