WABCO Partners With Huf Electronics Bretten To Develop Next Generation TPMS For Trucks, Buses And Trailers

Building on its industry-leading IVTM system, WABCO said it expects to offer its customers a choice of internally or externally mounted tire sensors or a mix of both types of sensors on new commercial vehicles.

BRUSSELS, Belgium – WABCO, a global technology leader and tier-one supplier to the commercial vehicle industry, is partnering with Huf Electronics Bretten to develop WABCO’s next-generation tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) for trucks, buses and trailers. Huf Electronics Bretten is a leader in providing tire pressure monitoring equipment to the automotive industry. WABCO’s new system will be available to original equipment manufacturers and in the aftermarket in the second half of 2014.

Building on its industry-leading IVTM system, WABCO said it expects to offer its customers a choice of internally or externally mounted tire sensors or a mix of both types of sensors on new commercial vehicles. In the new system, WABCO will leverage the additional tire temperature monitoring capability of Huf’s internal sensor technology, based on its track record of more than 20 years.

Tire pressure monitoring detects tire leakages at an early stage, allowing drivers to park safely and take appropriate action to minimize vehicle downtime. Tire leakages are the most frequent reason for commercial vehicle downtime. Proper inflation extends tire life by as much as 20 percent and reduces fuel consumption by up to 2 percent. With WABCO’s award-winning TrailerGUARD telematics and IVTM system, fleet managers can remotely monitor tire pressure on each tire on every trailer via a Web portal, the company states.

“WABCO is committed to continue to pioneer the industry’s breakthrough technologies for tire pressure monitoring in commercial vehicles, and we will further show our technology leadership by offering a unique choice of internal and external tire sensors,” said Bodo Klein, WABCO vice president, vehicle dynamics and control systems. “WABCO strives to deliver a world of difference through innovations that enable vehicle makers and aftermarket customers to benefit from WABCO’s newest advancements in vehicle safety and efficiency.”

WABCO says the new system will be able to be adopted worldwide and will fit any commercial vehicle rim size, including those for off-road vehicles.
