SOUTHFIELD, MI — Federal-Mogul’s Carter fuel delivery products brand has introduced an exclusive CleanScreen fuel strainer designed to reduce the incidence of fuel delivery issues. Fuel contamination and strainer clogging are leading causes of premature fuel pump failures facing automotive service facilities.
The Carter CleanScreen is a patented strainer design that utilizes ultrasonically bonded, non-woven layers of filter media that retain significantly more contaminant material over a longer period of fuel pump operation. The CleanScreen identified by its unique, green filter material and Carter-branded “C” offers nearly twice the contaminant retention capacity of conventional original equipment and aftermarket-style strainers, according to the company. CleanScreen also provides 40 percent longer continuous operation than other popular materials before contaminants impede flow to the fuel pump.
Carter CleanScreen strainers are offered in Carter replacement pump modules for applications with comparatively high incidence of strainer clogging and/or contaminant-related pump failure.
Fuel delivery issues rank among the leading causes of automotive service comebacks. In most cases, the fuel pumps themselves are not at fault; rather, operation of the pump has been impaired by the presence of contaminants (including rust particles, dirt, sand, etc.) in the tank or fuel supply. During pump operation, these particles are drawn into and retained by the fuel pump strainer. As the strainer nears its filtering capacity, fuel flow can be reduced to the extent that the vehicle will exhibit a variety of drivability issues.
“In many of these cases, too much clogging will prevent adequate fuel flow to the engine. The customer will then return to the repair shop and the technician will install a new fuel pump or module,” said Carter Product Manager Jeff Richardson. “Unfortunately, by simply installing another fuel pump without addressing the source and presence of contaminants in the vehicle tank the problem is likely to happen again.”
Federal-Mogul strongly recommends that a vehicle’s fuel tank be drained and thoroughly flushed of contaminants prior to any fuel pump replacement. Unfortunately, this important repair step isn’t followed by all service providers. In addition, flushing will not protect a vehicle from repeat contamination from an outside source, such as a gasoline retailer whose own storage tanks and filtering systems are contaminated.
By relying on a Carter fuel pump assembly featuring the CleanScreen strainer, technicians can bring a vital added margin of reliability to the vehicle’s fuel delivery system minimizing potentially expensive customer complaints and comebacks, according to Federal-Mogul. CleanScreen has significantly higher retention capacity and the strainer is far less likely to cause a fuel starvation issue, even when contaminants are present in the fuel supply.
“CleanScreen is engineered to address the real-life aftermarket service environment,” Richardson said. “If you’ve experienced unnecessary comebacks related to strainer clogging and other pump performance issues, Carter has the answer.”
The introduction of Carter CleanScreen continues the brand’s unique focus on delivering innovative, problem-solving “Fuel Tech Solutions” that help speed the repair and prevent future reliability or performance issues. Each Carter Fuel Tech Solution is based on extensive input from technicians and other automotive professionals.
