WASHINGTON — Anti-Counterfeiting legislation is making progress on Capitol Hill. The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security passed the Stop Counterfeiting in Manufactured Goods Act (H.R. 32) without amendment on March 17.
If passed, H.R. 32 would add mandatory destruction provisions to the trademark law. The bill would also clarify that it is illegal for counterfeiters to sell counterfeit versions of the trademarks themselves on labels, patches and medallions, for use by others who affix them to counterfeit products.
The vote followed a hearing on the bill, which featured testimony from Paul Fox, director, global external relations, Gillette Co. Fox also serves as the chairman of the business community’s Coalition Against Counterfeiting and Piracy. The full House Judiciary Committee is expected to address the bill in April.
