WASHINGTON, DC — The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released a draft of a brochure its currently developing about current effective practices to prevent brake and clutch repairers from asbestos exposure. The brochure, which will provide extensive information regarding safety during exposure to brake and clutch dust containing asbestos fibers, will be made available to automotive professionals as well as DIYers. The brochure also includes the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) regulatory requirements for automotive technicians. OSHA’s requirements are the same as those found in the EPA’s Worker Protection Rule.
The EPA is encouraging the public to provide feedback and comments regarding the draft brochure. The Automotive Service Association (ASA) has reviewed the draft brochure and encourages independent repair shops to do so as well. All comments must be received by Oct. 23, 2006.
Once the brochure is finalized, ASA will make this information available on its website. To view the entire draft brochure, please visit ASA’s legislative Web site: http://www.TakingTheHill.com
