DOT to accelerate connected car rule making

Association Of Global Automakers: DOT’s Decision To Accelerate Connected Car Rulemaking Is Right Move

U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Anthony Foxx announced an initiative to advance its planned timeline for the vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) rulemaking.

DOT Department of Transportation - LogoWASHINGTON, D.C. – The Association of Global Automakers (Global Automakers) says it applauds the recent announcement by U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Anthony Foxx to advance its planned timeline for the vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) rulemaking.

“NHTSA is recognizing the rapid pace of innovation occurring in vehicle safety,” said John Bozzella, Global Automakers president and CEO. “The faster we move toward deployment of V2V communications, the sooner consumers will receive the benefits of this lifesaving technology.”

V2V communication systems are dependent on wireless technology in the 5.9 GHz spectrum. Global Automakers said it appreciates DOT’s commitment to maintaining this bandwidth and its willingness to test safe sharing proposals. The auto industry is responding to calls to share this spectrum with unlicensed Wi-Fi devices by working with DENSO International America Inc. and Cisco Systems Inc. to test a potential sharing approach that is compatible with V2V communications.

“We all share the vision of using advanced technologies to improve motor vehicle safety on the nation’s roadways,” said Bozzella. “We look forward to continuing our work with DOT and other stakeholders to ensure V2V technology becomes successful in the marketplace.”
