Continental Announces Voluntary Tire Recall

The voluntary recall involves 14,567 passenger tires after discovering potential contamination to the belt package that occurred during the production process.

Continental Tire the Americas LLC (CTA) has announced a voluntary recall involving 14,567 passenger tires after discovering potential contamination to the belt package that occurred during the production process. This potential contamination may result in a lack of adhesion, which could cause partial or complete tread or belt loss to the tire, resulting in loss of vehicle control.

Most of the affected tires were installed as OE on certain General Motors (GM) full-size truck and SUV models and a small portion were sold in the tire replacement market in the U.S.

These tires met all federal safety standards. However, after some tires were returned to CTA through its warranty process, CTA immediately conducted a thorough analysis. The findings indicate that certain P275/55R20 111S CrossContact LX20 tires produced at the company’s Mt. Vernon, Illinois, plant between May 3 and May 9, 2015, are potentially contaminated and therefore, do not meet CTA’s quality or performance expectations in the field.

CTA will notify owners of affected vehicles and will make available replacement tires free of charge.

CTA notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Oct. 3, 2016, of its voluntary U.S. recall campaign and is beginning an intensive communication with dealers, wholesalers as well as customers who purchased the tires.

Consumers seeking more information, including instructions for identifying recalled tires, locating participating dealers, or general inquiries can go to continentaltire.custhelp.com. Customers can also contact CTA customer relations at 1-888-799-2168.

GM customers can look up their vehicle identification number (VIN) on the NHTSA website, vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/, or can check the GM website, GMOwnerCenter.com/recalls, to see if their vehicle could be impacted by the CTA tire recall.
