Brembo Unveiling Its First In-Wheel Application, New Calipers For High-End Cars At IAA

After three years of evaluation and experimentation in wheel-end architecture, Brembo is taking steps into the future, endorsing the innovative European project EU-LIVE. The company also presented five new opening calipers that allows a weight reduction of 8 percent while maintaining stiffness.

Brembo 2 - LogoBrembo is presenting a “sneak preview” at the 66th edition of the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. Brembo has fitted a car with four electric engines, one for each wheel. They each have 90 Kw of maximum power and 900 Nm of maximum torque, averaging 60 Kw and 600 Nm respectively.

Brembo is one of 12 partners in the EU-LIVE project (Efficient Urban Light Vehicles), presented last June in Graz, Austria. It involves a European consortium of companies in the automotive sector, parts manufacturers and research institutes. Brembo is the only Italian company to participate in EU-LIVE, which is determined to make L-category electric vehicles more attractive. Until now, this category has remained on the margin of the market because of the high sales price.

Combining the know-how of its partners, EU-LIVE aims to create a common platform that would allow three different electric vehicles to be developed in 36 months, with two, three and four wheels. All of these vehicles will weigh less than 450 Kg and will be ready to go into production.

The company also is presenting a new family of aluminum calipers for high-end cars at the IAA show. The new fixed caliper, available in 17-inch (5.9 kg in weight), 18-inch (7.7 kg) and 19-inch (8 kg) versions, is the optimal solution for cars with discs with a high braking surface. Such discs usually require generously-sized calipers, which entails an increase in weight.

However, with the new caliper, which has only recently gone into production, Brembo has instead managed to combine a size optimised for discs with high braking surfaces with remarkable lightness. The distinctive feature of this caliper is the new shape, centered on five openings.

This solution, patented by Brembo, ensures a mass reduction of about 8 percent as a result of the reduction in the material at the points in the caliper with least stress. Such a significant weight reduction in the unsprung mass of the vehicle means a reduction in fuel consumption and pollutant emissions.

The particular emphasis in the design of the caliper allowed the need for lightness to be reconciled with that of stiffness and performance. The use of the 5 openings does not entail any loss of performance in the braking system.

Brembo has also given special attention to the aesthetics of the new family of calipers. Through a co-design approach with each OEM customer, Brembo will be implementing solutions specifically tailored to individual car models in order to complement each manufacturer’s different design style.
