BASF to Host Car Restoration Symposium

Company will show 1957 300 SL Mercedes Gullwing at 2012 Concours d'Elegance.

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – As collectors, restorers, auction buyers, media and auto executives gather at the 2012 Concours d’Elegance July 28-29 at The Inn at St. John’s in Plymouth, Mich., BASF Automotive Refinish Solutions will host a Classic Car Restoration Symposium and display its Glasurit paint system and its rare Chip Foose-redesigned 1957 Mercedes 300SL Gullwing.

As part of the world’s largest chemical company, BASF Automotive Refinish is a leading manufacturer of coatings for the collision repair, commercial fleet and automotive specialty markets. BASF has been supplying the automotive coatings industry since 1888 and its paint products are supported by technical training programs, advanced color information systems and business management seminars.

The BASF-hosted Classic Car Restoration Symposium will run in a constant rotation from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 28 in the Judea Room at the Inn at St. John’s conference center, and will feature experts presenting an exclusive series of restoration seminars on finishes, metal fabrication, chrome re-plating and leather work.

The BASF 1957 Mercedes Gullwing – one of only 76 built in the Gullwing’s last year of production and reinterpreted by automotive design legend Chip Foose – also will be on display in the Judea Room during the Symposium.

BASF’s Glasurit paint showcase, featuring the Classic Car Color collection, and also featuring the Mercedes Gullwing, will be on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 29.

“The Concours d’Elegance is a special event when it comes to showcasing collectible cars,” said Vitor Margaronis, marketing director, BASF Coatings, North America. “As a leading supplier of coatings to classic car enthusiasts, BASF is looking forward to sharing restoration tips and showcasing the incredible Gullwing, which demonstrates the superior aesthetics offered by our Glasurit 90-Line Waterborne Refinish System.”
