Aptiv Announces Autonomous Driving Milestones, Opens Las Vegas Technical Center

This new facility will be home to Aptiv's Las Vegas autonomous vehicle commercial operations, command center and customer showroom.

Delphi spin-off Aptiv, provider of the first autonomous driving technology to be used in a public commercial autonomous vehicle (AV) service, announced today the grand opening of its Las Vegas Technical Center. The facility joins Boston, Singapore and Pittsburgh as one of Aptiv’s major autonomous vehicle hubs, and is a state-of-the-art, all-inclusive facility for vehicle operations, research and development, data management and technology demonstration center.

Aptiv says this investment is a milestone in the company’s continued expansion of its revenue-generating AV activities. Aptiv’s technology has been supporting public rides since May 2018.

The 130,000 square-foot facility showcases Aptiv’s end-to-end autonomous mobility business. Most notably, Las Vegas is home to the company’s largest self-driving fleet — a portion of which is available to passengers through an ongoing partnership with Lyft, enabling visitors and residents to hail an Aptiv AV to and from locations throughout the city. Rides are priced at the standard Lyft rate.

“With more than 1 million autonomous miles logged globally, Aptiv’s commercial AV pilots have proven our ability to launch, build and scale a successful, end-to-end autonomous mobility solution,” said Karl Iagnemma, president of autonomous mobility, Aptiv. “The investment in our Las Vegas Technical Center gives us the ability to further advance the efficiency of our operations, gather key commercial AV learnings and enhance safety operator training. We are proud to be setting the stage for future deployments, as we expand to more passengers in more cities around the world.”

Aptiv’s autonomous vehicles are supporting more than 1,600 destinations across Clark County and the City of Las Vegas, including popular entertainment venues, the Las Vegas Convention Center and City Hall. Plans for servicing additional locations, a more expansive customer base and additional use cases are ongoing.

To date, the program has completed more than 25,000 paid autonomous rides, while maintaining a nearly perfect average passenger rating of 4.95 out of five stars.
