From Tire Review
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- NHTSA has issued its "final" regulations regarding the testing and labeling of new consumer tires, but apparently has left open certain key aspects previously outlined in its initial ruling.
The 195-page document was issued just one day before NHTSA was holding public hearings regarding the consumer education portion of the new regulations. It was that portion of the Congressionally mandated tire fuel efficiency regulations that was among areas left incomplete by NHTSA's latest release.
The new rule will require tiremakers to test and grade their consumer tires for rolling resistance, traction and treadwear, and display those grades on a label affixed to each tire. The exact label design has not been set.
Once it is finalized and published, the new regulations will take effect within 12 months.
Tire Review will have more on this important new regulation next week.
