According to a report released March 16 by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), United Autoworkers (UAW) union and the Center for American Progress, the move toward more fuel-efficient vehicles could lead to the creation of 150,000 jobs in the U.S. by 2020 with proper policies and incentives. Climate change legislation and new standards on vehicle emissions and fuel efficiency will be responsible for as many as 190,000 jobs worldwide.

The number of jobs that remain in the U.S. will be largely dependent on incentives for companies to invest in new technologies. According to UAW president Ron Gettelfinger, the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing incentive program, which provides low-interest loans to companies for the development of fuel-efficient vehicles, is a perfect example of how government incentives can spur job creation in this area.

The report, “Driving Growth: How Clean Cars and Climate Policy Can Create Jobs,” used estimated car sales of 15.7 million in 2014 to reach its conclusions. The full report is available at www.nrdc.org/energy/drivinggrowth.asp.
