Congress May Consider Vehicle Safety Legislation in Light of Toyota Recall

During hearings held by the House Energy and Commerce Committee, chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), stated that safety must come first and questioned whether the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) possessed the tools and resources needed to ensure safety of the electronic controls and computers operating today's vehicles.

House Democratic leaders are considering whether to introduce legislation that would beef up federal oversight of automotive safety as a result of the Toyota recall.

During hearings held by the House Energy and Commerce Committee, chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), stated that safety must come first and questioned whether the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) possessed the tools and resources needed to ensure safety of the electronic controls and computers operating today's vehicles.
  
While Toyota continues to maintain that the problem with sudden acceleration by many of its vehicles was not caused by electronics, head of the U.S. division of Toyota Jim Lenz has admitted under questioning that they are not certain of the cause of the problem.
