The Pulse: Use of Premium vs. Second Line Parts, Month by Month
November 20, 2009By aftermarketNews staff

In this installment of "The Pulse," we take a closer look at the state of business today at the repair shop level. In this edition, we will review rolling month-by-month data for the percentage of premium parts used in repairs versus second line parts. Utilizing data from IMR Inc., this week we review the numbers for September 2008 through September 2009.

In a recent survey conducted by IMR, technicians were asked the following two questions: Generally speaking, what percentage of the parts you use are premium line parts? What percentage of the parts you use are second line parts?

For the second month in a row, the percentage of premium line parts used in repairs dropped slightly – from 64 percent to 63 percent. Use of second line parts remained essentially the same in August and September -- 39.06 percent compared to 39.81 percent.

Comparing year-to-year, the use of premium line parts is down significantly, dropping almost 10 points from 72 percent in September 2008 to 63 percent in September 2009. The use of second line parts has gone up year-to-year, rising from 33 percent in September 2008 to roughly 40 percent in September 2009.

Editor’s Note: The graph above reflects combined responses to the two questions and therefore does not equal 100 percent.
