The most recent unemployment report from the U.S. Department of Labor (DoL) showed that jobless claims have risen to 9.8 percent across the country. While many economists believe the recession has ended, employers are still reticent to being hiring again. The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) said it believes the DoL numbers should be viewed as a “yellow flag” for our nation’s economy. In a statement issued Oct. 5, NAM Chief Economist David Huether warned that the economy continues to be in a tenuous position. "Our economy remains fragile and could stall out or even shift into reverse if Congress and the Administration enact policies that discourage investment, hamper flexibility and raise costs of doing business,” Huether said.
When asked what they thought about the most recent jobs report, 80 percent of AMN readers said they expect to see more job losses through the end of the year. Only 20 percent remain more optimistic and believe the job numbers will improve in the coming months.
