From Staff & Wire Reports

AKRON, OHIO -- Five rubber companies have agreed to pay some $18 million to the U.S. EPA to fund final clean-up of a Canton, Ohio, landfill the government said they polluted.

Current tiremakers Goodyear and Bridgestone, and rubber companies Goodyear Aerospace, BFGoodrich and GenCorp, agreed to a consent decree by the U.S. District Court to fund the clean-up and refund the state of Ohio $875,000 in past costs.

The decree states that the five companies must complete the clean-up at the 30-acre landfill under the supervision of the Ohio and U.S. EPAs, including planting vegetation and monitoring groundwater for contaminants. The companies must also operate and maintain a methane gas venting system at the landfill.
