BROADVIEW, IL --
Robert Bosch Corp. now offers higher amp new and remanufactured alternators and higher kilowatt starters for the Dodge Sprinter van.
Three different versions of Sprinter alternators are now available, including the 100 percent new AL0791N at 90 amps, AL0798N at 150 amps and AL0801N, which delivers 120 amps. Bosch remanufactured alternators for the Sprinter are numbered AL079TX, 90 amps, AL0798X, 150 amps and AL0801X, 120 amps.
According to Kenneth Brom, director, product management, starting and charging products for Bosch, these part numbers are relatively new for Bosch.
“We’ve only had these part numbers in the current catalog for a short period of time, so they’re relatively new," said Brom. "When Sprinters first came to this country, they were shipped all in pieces, then assembled in the U.S. Federal Express was the first company to use Sprinters. Now, the Sprinter is marketed as the Dodge Sprinter.”
Although the new parts were in the market before the vans were even sold, the timing of parts availability now, “is a good thing,” said Brom. “A lot of people are just now getting used to what a Sprinter is and we’re starting to see a lot of them on the road. Sprinters are being used by large pickup and delivery fleets as well as local delivery operators with only a couple of trucks. ”
“Bosch was the original equipment alternator supplier for Sprinter - we’ve always been on the Sprinter,” Brom said. The new alternators have higher amp output so they can handle an increasing number of vehicle accessories, such as CD players and stereos.
The 100 percent new and more powerful Sprinter starter (SR0465N) and the remanufactured unit (SRO465X) feature a new permanent magnet design that is lighter weight than the OE unit and is significantly more powerful, according to Bosch. The new starters will be rated 2.3 kilowatts or higher and are interchangeable on the vehicle, Brom said.
“Sprinters have diesel engines, so that’s why it takes more starter kilowatts to turn the engines over," he said. "If the engines were gasoline, it is more than likely that the starter would be 1.3 or 1.7 kilowatts.”
Current Bosch catalogs list the new alternators and starters under Freightliner. However, when new catalogs come out later this year, the Sprinter starter and alternator numbers will be published under both Freightliner and Dodge names, Brom said.
