ASTORIA, N.Y. William “Bill” Hayes, owner of Arc Remanufacturing in Astoria, N.Y., died Sept. 4 after a long battle with Leukemia. He was 69.
Hayes spent more than 40 years in the automotive remanufacturing business, and was a co-founder of Arc Remanufacturing. The family owned and operated business, located in Astoria, began in 1963.
During his illness, Hayes spent nearly a year and a half at Sloan Kettering Hospital in Manhattan, where he willingly tried new and experimental treatments that could potentially shorten his life but help others. In a letter from his friends and colleagues at Woodbury Automotive Warehouse, it was said that this was a testimonial to his character.
For more than 20 years, Hayes was a corporate sponsor of Sloan Kettering and helped many people get treatment at Sloan. In lieu of flowers, Hayes has requested donations that would be used specifically for his doctor’s leukemia research.
The family is holding a private funeral.
