DETROIT -- Environmentally friendly sports and performance vehicles take center stage at this year's North American International Auto Show, as automakers prove that you don't have to drive a gas guzzler to step on the pedal.

While the latest Lamborghinis, Maseratis and Ferraris can all take you close to 200 miles per hour, other manufacturers are figuring out ways to make high horsepower a little more responsible. Two examples include:

• The Corvette ZR-1, which is built entirely of lightweight material, aluminum, magnesium and carbon fiber. It has one of the best fuel economies in its class.

• The Cadillac CTS V, which has 550 horsepower and 550 pound feet of torque.

The North American International Auto Show runs through Jan. 18.
