Ashland Inc. Reports First Quarter Income of 60 Cents Per Share from Continuing Operations

Ashland Inc. has announced preliminary income from continuing operations of $38 million, or 60 cents per share, for the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2007, the first quarter of its fiscal year. This compares with income from continuing operations of $53 million, or 81 cents per share, in the same prior-year quarter. Among the factors contributing to the decline were a 21-percent increase in depreciation expense and a 6 percentage-point increase in the income tax rate.

Gupta Joins Ashland as Director, Valvoline International

Naveen Gupta will join Ashland Inc. as director of global heavy duty, OEM and emerging markets for the company’s Valvoline International business. The new position will be effective Oct. 1, according to Craig Moughler, senior vice president and managing director, Valvoline International. Currently, Gupta serves as managing director of Valvoline Cummins Limited, a joint venture partnership in India.

Ashland’s Valvoline Division to Purchase Car Brite

Valvoline, a division of Ashland Inc., has signed an agreement to purchase Car Brite, a marketer of products for the U.S. professional automotive reconditioning industry. Valvoline will purchase the business from E & A Industries of Indianapolis, Ind., in a cash transaction. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
